President Joe Biden said on Monday that the United States is increasing Covid vaccine exports to other countries in order to reclaim "American leadership" in the global fight against the pandemic, dismissing rival efforts by China and Russia.

Biden confirmed that 20 million more doses of Covid vaccines will be distributed over the next six weeks, bringing the total number of vaccines scheduled to be distributed by the end of June to 80 million.

The increase comes as other governments put pressure on the Biden administration to use its large vaccine surplus to assist struggling countries, especially now that significant progress has been made in rolling out vaccinations at home.

President Joe Biden has announced that 20 million more doses of Covid vaccine will be distributed over the next six weeks. The total number of doses scheduled to be shipped by the end of June will be 80 million. Biden dismisses rival efforts by China and Russia to spread their own vaccines. The White House would not say which countries were being prioritized for the shipments, but Biden has indicated that Washington will do everything it can to assist India in its fight against a pandemic outbreak. The next wave of 20 million doses would also include vaccines that are already approved for use in the United States by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. The initiative addresses concerns that Moscow and Beijing have been taking advantage of the worldwide crisis to spread influence through distribution of their own national vaccines in a so-called “vaccine diplomacy” contest.
